Colon Cancer Facts That Could Save Your Life...

Colon Cancer 101

E

ach year, there are 49,920 deaths from colorectal cancer. In America, 106,100 new cases of colon cancer and 40,870 new cases of rectal cancer will be discovered this year as well. Colon cancer patients have cancerous cells in the longest part of their upper large intestine, which is the 4 to 5 feet known as "the colon," whereas the affected area in rectal cancer patients is in the last six inches of the colon closest to the anus.

Be Aware of Colon Cancer Symptoms

O

nce the black, tar-like stools, bloody bowel movements and severe bowel obstructions occur, it may already be too late. The appearance of colon cancer symptoms usually do not occur until patients are well into Stage III or Stage IV cancer. Then, their only options are to undergo risky surgery and take chemotherapy drugs. However, if discovered during Stages 0 - II, doctors can usually remove the cancer through a colonoscope or a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Since the tests are uncomfortable, many Americans fail to take the proper precautions to protect themselves from this deadly, yet preventable, cancer.

How To Prevent Colon Cancer

M

ore than 95% of colorectal cancers come from adenocarcinoma polyps. These cancers start in cells that form mucus glands, which lubricate the colon and rectum. A polyp is a group of cells that form on top of each other and may eventually turn cancerous. Carcinoid tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors and lymphomas also cause 5% of colon cancers. Doctors say the best way to prevent colon cancer is to undergo regular screening tests after the age of 50 and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Stages of Colon Cancer

T

he definition of colon cancer is "cancer that forms in the tissues of the colon, which is the longest part of the large intestine." Most often, a colon cancer cell is responsible for making and releasing mucus and other fluids, so it's very easy to pass on to surrounding tissues. This type of cancer is called an adenocarcinoma. This cancer progresses slowly over the years, through five different stages, which can often be detected through screening colonoscopy procedures.

Dangers And Risks of Colonoscopy Procedures

I

t's everyone's worst nightmare to go in for a routine test only to find that he or she is now worse off than before, yet that's exactly what happened at VA hospitals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Augusta, Georgia; and Miami, Florida. Out of 10,000 patients who had colon cancer screening, 6 veterans tested positive for HIV, 34 tested positive for hepatitis C and 13 tested positive for hepatitis B following their routine procedures. One could argue these people may have needed a hepatitis treatment prior to their colonoscopy treatments; that these were just isolated incidents. However, there are a few risks of colonoscopy procedures that should be discussed beforehand.

Virtual Colonoscopy

F

ifty percent of Americans over the age of 50 have never had a colonoscopy, according to a 2008 study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Many people find the idea of fasting, undergoing slight sedation and having a tube/camera up their rectum and into their intestines to be quite unnerving. No one wants to believe that metastatic colon cancer could happen to them. The virtual colonoscopy has emerged as a new way of testing for colon cancer, without all the invasiveness of traditional testing.

Bowel Cancer Screening

R

oughly 30% of middle-aged and older Americans have one or more polyps on the surface of the colon, which are relatively harmless but may become cancerous over time. While anyone can develop a polyp, some people are at higher risk of turning up with one during a bowel cancer screening, such as those over 50, smokers, overweight individuals, people on a high-fat/low-fiber diet, or those with family histories of colon cancer. Some early colon cancer symptoms include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and a change in bowel movements, but these are rarely found until it's too late, which underscores the importance of early screening.

Ulcerative Colitis 101

U

lcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the large intestine (the colon) and there are several different types. Thirty-percent of all patients have "ulcerative proctitis," which involves an inflammation of the rectum; the last six inches of the colon only. The prognosis for this type of colitis is good, since there are limited complications of this mild form, yet there will still be an increased risk of colon polyps and cancer. Another type, "proctosigmoiditis," affects the rectum and the s-shaped sigmoid colon just above the rectum. "Left-sided colitis" sufferers have inflammation from the rectum to the spleen area. "Pan-ulcerative/total colitis" sufferers have their entire colon affected and may result in serious complications.

Rectal Cancer 101

E

ach year, 150,000 people are diagnosed with rectal cancer. Talking about the bowels can be confusing, as there are different names for the same body part; for instance the colon and the large intestine. What is the difference between a rectum and an anus? As food passes through the body, it moves from mouth to esophagus, down to the stomach, into the small intestine, into the large intestine (ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon), into the rectum and out through the anus. Cancer of the rectum affects that last six inches of the colon before food is expelled. Like early colon cancer symptoms, early cancer symptoms of the rectum are also highly curable if detected before the disease worsens.
